Welsh Games Archive

In an ideal world it would be great if all Welsh games could be preserved, not just those of Dyfed players, but clearly this is probably never going to happen. The best we can manage would be a central repository where as many games as possible could be stored. A website is an obvious place to deposit these games and I am offering this website as just such a place. I must stress that this is a personal venture - this proposed Welsh archive is entirely unofficial and independent of the Welsh Chess Union and of the Dyfed Chess Association. I ought to add that Jon Gilbert jonathan@gilbertj36.freeserve.co.uk, Bill Hewitt billh@billhewitt.fsnet.co.uk, John Trevelyan JTrevL@aol.com and Kevin Staveley Kevin.staveley@btinternet.com are also working hard to archive Welsh games (they probably started long before me!) and I hope to be able to work closely with them.

I already have a database of over 4,000 games played by Welsh players (obviously just a drop in the ocean!) and my intention is to make this database available to all visitors of this site. A few games (probably the most recently acquired) will be presented in such a way that they can be played through online and the rest will be downloadable to visitors in either .pgn or .cbh format. For those without chess playing software, the .pgn format would be the best option because this format is essentially plain text and can be read by any text editor or word processor (and even human beings!). For anyone wanting to submit games who doesn't have Fritz, Chessbase or other programs that allow games to be recorded, I would recommend Chessbase Light which can be downloaded free from http://www.chessbase.com/download/cblight/index.asp This makes the job much easier and also prevents errors - if you type in the wrong letters in a word processor you will never realise your mistake - Chessbase will let you know immediately!

Games that have also been annotated are obviously very desirable but not essential ! If all else fails you can also submit your games as ordinary text - algebraic or descriptive notation - but I can't guarantee that these will make the archive very quickly (they have to be laboriously entered into Fritz or Chessbase!). Please send in any, or all, of your games - losses as well as wins! Remember - you might want to consult the archive yourself one day, so try to make it as complete as possible! If you have played a game you would like to be preserved - send it in!
