Winter Butterfly  -  12c    12/7/02

Dear Friends.

Copies of some emails I have received that I hope you will find interesting.  More to come as soon as I can get round to it.

  From Kevin Staveley

Dai,

Do you feel like starting a poll of interested people.

MOBILE PHONES

The rule states that emergency workers on call and expectant fathers can have an active mobile phone in the playing hall IF THE CONTROLLER HAS BEEN INFORMED BEFOREHAND. However, the rule states that a player MAY be defaulted if a phone rings.

QUESTION:

Should a player be defaulted if their mobile phone rings in a playing hall? YES or NO

Kevin.

It would be very interesting to have some comments on Kevin's email.  Why not have your say now rather than wait for something to happen in a tournament, and then complain about the controllers decision.  No need to give reasons unless you want to, a simple yes or no answer to the question is good enough.

WU KO Cup

At the WU KO Cup Finals day, White Knights CC of Llanelli won the main event for the first time, against a strong Cardiff team.

Cardiff started clear favourites, with a total of some 750 plus grading points advantage spread over the 4 boards.

Cardiff started well with Charles Cobb defeating Jason Garcia on board 1, as black, in a kings indian attack. David Guy, having dropped a pawn on move 5, battled back but eventually went down to Gary Dawson on board 4 after the time control,  2-0 to Cardiff.

This left Alan Young with a strong attack against Alan Spice on 3, but, as usual, no time left. Alan sacrificed a knight and when the dust cleared, he was winning and mated his opponent. This left Bill Hewitt with an inferior ending against John Trevelyan on board 2. When the queens came off on move 41 it became apparent that the game had swung the way of the Llanelli player, much to the surprise of both players. In the end, both queened a pawn, but faced with losing his queen to a skewer, John resigned. White Knights had won on board count !

Doubtless you will receive the full scores from the other matches from other captains!

Thanks for the above, Bill.
