Dear Friends

Cardiff Struggle in Europe

Despite valiant resistance from all the players Cardiff are finding the
European Club Championships hard work, losing heavily in their first two
games.
Round 1 saw our heroes in action against the Austrian club SK Hohenems.
Charles Cobb pulled of a great win, but unfortunately we were overpowered
on the other boards.

CARDIFF CHESS CLUB  vs SK Hohenems 1-5
      Cobb, Charles  Hickl, Jörg 1-0
      Trevelyan, John  Atlas, Valery 0-1
      Spice, Alan  Gustafsson, Jan 0-1
      Borg, A  Naumann, Alexander 0-1
      Fletcher, J.  Bezold, Michael 0-1
Davies, Peter L.  Novkovic, Milan 0-1

Worst was to follow as they were defeated 6-0 by the mighty Arhus of
Denmark.  However, they are confident of opening their account with a good
performance against the unfancied BYE this afternoon.

Cardiff are real fighters and they still have a lot to play for.  Last year
Monmouth pulled off the best ever Welsh result in this tournament by just
getting out of the bottom quarter.  To beat this Cardiff would have to pull
up to 34th out of 49.  I think they can still reasonably aim for this, so
good luck lads, and keep fighting.

Elsewhere in the tourny there was a fine win for Monmouth's James Sherwin,
playing top board for Bristol against Chuchelow of Rochade and a fine draw
for David Buckley in the same match.  Well done both, bring us back a GM
norm Jim.

Gwent Closed
Ioan Rees and Mark Adams won the tournament with 4½ points each.
Nick Davies held Jon Gilbert in the last round to win the u1700 grading
prize outright with a score of 3.
Many thanks to Richard Batey for that result.
