Crumlin Crumble to Cardiff Crunch

A magnificent win for Cardiff in round 4 of the European Team Championship as they destroyed the Irish champion 5.5-0.5.  Great wins for Charles Cobb, John Trevelyan, Andy Borg, john Fletcher and peter Davies, while Alan Spice completed the rout with a draw against John Hurley (2095) on board 3.

Unfortunately the euphoria was short lived as they went down to Shlomo in the next round, but they are still in with a chance to beating Monmouth's record. To do so they need to win both their last round games.  They are also in with an outside chance of becoming the top British team (the others are Bristol and Barbican).

Today, Cardiff, who are ahead of both Bristol and Barbican, have a difficult match against Boey Temse.

Good luck lads.

Elsewhere in the tourny, there was a draw for Monmouth's James Sherwin and a win for David Buckley as Bristol recorded their first win.  David recorded another win in round 5 against Napredak.

Could I remind you of the email from Rhyddings yesterday.  An excellent chance for someone to get some extra games in:

We badly need to recruit new strong players. Could you possibly
ask in WB for anyone interested in playing for Rhyddings (in the West Wales
League) to contact me? (My work tel is 01792 454302, home 01792 423952.)
Thanks very much

One nice feature of this tournament is that the Major is under 1850 rather than 1800. Quite a few 1800-1900 players have given up tournaments because the only place to play is the Open, where they can't really be competitive.  To be honest, with a grade of 1863 I'd rather play in England where there are still under 160 and under 175 tournaments.  Its not that I object to playing in Opens, but in Wales the split always seems to be at 1800 and I do occasionally like to play in something where I have a chance of doing well.  So its good to see that at least some of the 1800+ group will be catered for in this tourny.
