Emails to the Editor

Dave Wallum

I am sorry to be the bearer of sad tidings, but I have recently been
informed that Dave Wallum, a long standing member of Bridgend Chess Club,
has recently died.  He will be greatly missed, both in his own club and by
opponents.

I understand that the service will be at Coychurch Crematorium on Thursday
the 10th Oct at 3pm.  However, I need to check as the email from Mike Kearn
was accidentally deleted.  The time and date will be confirmed as soon as
possible.

received.  So if you want the latest news, read Butterfly.  Many thanks to
Mark for offering this service, particularly as its bound to take up
valuable time when he will have other matters requiring attention.

I'm unhappy.  I have just read a leaflet entitled "The way forward?". It's a
load of piffle, not a way forward but two steps backwards.

We have been plagued by eligibility debates for 25 years.  Little good has
come of them.  It seems to me that the details are unimportant - all we want
is for players to play in Welsh tournaments, especially the Welsh
Championship.  Erecting barriers at the Severn Bridge or within Wales does
not encourage individuals or improve standards, it only makes us weaker.

I feel really sorry for Kevin and his colleagues who put so much time and
effort into Welsh Chess to have to waste their energies on this rubbish.

So let's remove as many restrictions as we can, get on with playing Chess
and forget all this nonsense once and for all.

Regards

Peter
Thanks for your comments Peter, anybody else like to say something on this
matter.

I must admit I'm so d*** fed up of this issue that I didn't intend to make
any comments regarding it.  However, I suppose I would be doing a disservice
to readers if I didn't put forward my point of view, so I'll prepare an
article and send it our next week.

Perhaps you would be kind enough to pass on my congratulation to my old club
Cardiff.

The very fact that they qualified for this event was success in itself.

To achieve a result better than some of (dare I say it) our more established
sides is an excellent result.

During my latter years at Cardiff Chess Club, I was a great believer in the
submitting a side in the 4NCL. This result, is clearly proof that they would
be able to hold their own should they choose to.

Congratulations.

>From Julian Pardoe (Former Pontypridd member).
I moved back to Aldershot from Amsterdam a few years ago and bought a flat,
I am working for a health care company from the comfort of my spare
bedroom(when ntl arent having problems). Still talk a much better game than
I play, grade of just 126, played 1, won 1 so far this season against a 122,
so a decent start
