Olympiad Round 8 By Mark Adams

East Glam Closed (By Andrew Hennessy)

Dai, there was only a spelling mistake in the last report!

The Williams machine moves on. Another titled player bites the dust as Wales run Mexico close. Leighton will have to decide soon whether to freeze a possible IM norm at 9 games (this is where the rest of his games won't be counted for his norm), or go for the full title with a 2450 performance rating over 13 games. He's currently performing at about 2440. His next 2 games are vital.

His results so far are:

Bd1 GM Harikrishna P 2551 ½-½ FM Williams Leighton 2288

1 GM Aleksandrov Aleksej 2621 1-0 FM Williams Leighton 2288

1  FM  Williams Leighton  2288     0-1    GM  Dervishi Erald  2513

1 IM Jwad Ahmad Aziz 2288   0 - 1   FM Williams Leighton 2288

1 IM Dukaczewski Piotr (2342) 0 -1  Williams Leighton (2288 )

1 FM Williams Leighton (2288) ½ -½ IM Sharavdorj Dashzeveg (2418 )

1 FM Williams Leighton 2288   1-0   IM Estrada Julian 2345

In round 8, the men were against Mexico, who had 4 IM's in their line up. The 1½-2½ result was a good score.  Leighton forced a weakness on c6 which lead to strong play on the queenside. This was enough for Leighton to mop up yet another titled player. Richard Jones' game fizzled out to a drawn rook and pawn ending. Sven Zeidler threw his game away. In the cold light of day he had a trivial win. As we all know, it's never easy at the board.

 R8 Wales 1½-2½ Mexico

1 FM Williams Leighton 2288   1-0   IM Estrada Julian 2345

2  Dineley Richard 2284   0-1   IM Gonzalez Jose 2416

3  Jones Richard S 2246   ½-½   IM Espinosa Rafael 2414

4  Zeidler Sven P 2275   0-1   IM Garmendez Florentino 2408

The ladies had a disappointing loss against a very young South African side. Debbie Evans-Quek had a good draw on board 1. Annie Powell, for some reason, didn't take a won piece and was very lucky that her opponent went for perpetual check in a winning position. Kathy Griffiths had a stomach upset during her game which was enough to ruin her concentration.

R8 Wales 1-2 South Africa

van der Merwe Cecile   ½-½  Evans-Quek Debbie (2047 )

Powell Annie (2018) ½ -½  Pretorius Mignon

Bleazard Claire  1 -0  Griffiths Katherine (2005 )

Thank you Mark.

I don't narmally publish information from the Olympiad web site as Mark's reports are far more accurate.  However, if its correct, in round 9 Wales went down 2.5 1.5 to Angola.  Leighton drew with a 2247 and Francis Rayner won.  Tomorrow Wales take on Peru.  They have a 2605 GM on board one and Leighton would have the black bits.  So should he stick with the norm or go for an outright IM title?  A difficult decision.

            yours  truly  Mr Andrew Hennessy

The next edition will contain a very interesting article from John Trevelyan.  It seems that the rioting fans and flying  Peters Pies were not the end of the Cardiff adventures in Europe.  I would put it in this time, but it would make the edition too long.

One last comment, the people concerned will know who I am addressing.  I am not prepared to print anonymous articles, particularly when they attack individuals or officials.  The criticisms may or may not be valid, but if you are not prepared to put your name to an article, don't bother sending it to me.  However, in future I will pass it on to the individuals mentioned in the hope that they can work out who you are.  Hotmail and Yahoo addresses may not be as anonymous as you think.

Very best wishes

Dai James.
