Winter Butterfly
- 8a 5/2/02
Hello Friends
Nice to be back on-line. Quite a lot
of catching up to do, so I'll start with the most recent and try and work
through the backlog over the course of the next week.
WCU UNDER 2000
JAMBOREE.
Sunday 3rd Feb.
Gowerton.
Contested by teams of ten from Dyfed, East
Glam, Gwent and West Wales, this years event was a triumph for East
Glamorgan. The final scores were
East Glamorgan
17.5
Gwent 12.5
West Wales
6
Mid Wales
4
The title was really decided in the first
round at the end of which East Glam had 9 points a full 4.5 ahead of Gwent and
West Wales. I'm not sure what the Gwent captain said to his team between
the rounds, but it certainly had an effect as they rallied to take 8 out of 10
in the second round. However, the deficit was too much to recover and East
Glamorgan cruised home by 5 full points. East Glam's score of 17.5 out of 20
must be a record (does anybody know what the record score is?) and they actually
managed to go through the event without losing a game (15 wins, 5 draws).
Four of the five draws arose on boards 2 and 3 (G Rees and D James) and I hope
that the appearance of this email will help to scotch rumours that we were
ritually sacrificed on crossing the border at Bridgend.
East Glamorgan had the distinct advantage
of having a non-playing captain, Beryl Hughes. She played a large part in
their success, not only by initially organising the team but also by being there
on the day and dealing with matters, which although normally small, can be a
considerable distraction to players. For example, in my first round game
with Robert Taylor a problem arose with the clock. This was dealt with
quickly and amicably by the players and controller, but the fact that Beryl was
there to support me if there had been any difficulties, meant I could
confidently continue to concentrate on the game. I feel this is an area
that some of the other counties should look at, although it would mean that the
WCU would need to provide an extra memento trophy, one for the captain as well
as the ten players.
West Wales are to be congratulated on the
excellent organisation. The tournament was controlled by Ian Eustis in his
usual quiet and effective manner. I shall long remember the friendly
atmosphere and the hard games. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable
day.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS.
Dyfed Congress, Fishguard.
The year book shows this takes place in the
Fishguard Bay Hotel on 15 to 17 Feb. Details
from R Spencer, Riverside, Port Hirwaun, Cardigan.
SA43 2RJ. Tel (01239) 682703.
Unfortunately I've mislaid my entry form,
so could somebody confirm these details so I can circulate them. Details
of the round times, sections and entry fees would also be useful.
Unfortunately, for health reasons, I will
be unable to play. I wonder if somebody would be prepared to volunteer to
write a short report for Winter Butterfly?
I have a few comments I would like to make
regarding the forthcoming Ladies Championship and these will form part of the
next edition which, all being well, should be sent out before
Friday.
I hope it will also include some league
table updates.
Very best wishes
Dai James.
