EXTRAORDINARY INCIDENT IN ABERGAVENNY
MONMOUTH MATCH.
PLAYERS ACCUSED OF BRINGING GAME INTO
REPUTE.
There was a very unusual incident
in this weeks match between Abergavenny and Monmouth in the game
between Andy Borge and John Trevelyan.
Abergavenny and Monmouth are slugging it
out for the league, so every half point is vital. It was a close fought match
and at the end of the session the score stood at 2 draws and a win for Nigel
Saunders (Monmouth). At that point the game between Andy and John was
undecided, so a move having been sealed they retired to analyse the
position. With the help of IM James Sherwin they came to the conclusion
that Andy's position was lost and although there was still quite a bit
of play left Andy resigned rather than put John to the trouble of
travelling to complete the games.
Later that evening John discovered that
somehow or other the position they had showed James Sherwin was not
the final position and that the exchange of some pieces had left the
position drawn. Technically the game was now finished as Andy had resigned, but
John was unable to accept the position. He therefore telephoned Andy,
informed him of what had happened, told him in the circumstances he was unable
to accept his resignation and offered a draw. The draw was accepted
and the result amended accordingly. It should be added that all the
players in the Monmouth team fully agreed with John's action.
Knowing both the gentlemen involved, their
actions on this occasion comes as no surprise. Nevertheless, I
was very pleased to note that there is still room for the highest
standards of sporting behaviour in the game we all love.
Many thanks to Nigel Saunders for bringing
this to my attention.
Very Best Wishes
Dai James.
