There's a new feel about Welsh = Chess. =20 For a long time we've been in decline, but it seems at last we have = turned the=20 corner and begun to make progress. For some time I've wanted to do = something about getting internet chess going in Wales, but I've never = had enough=20 time to devote to it. In the past we have had to rely rather more = than we=20 ought to on the initiative of individuals, but those days appear to have = gone.=20 The WCU is no longer satisfied with drifting aimlessly, muddling along = from day=20 to day. (I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, but for couple of years = it has=20 given that impression.) Now it is becoming proactive with a number = of=20 initiatives aimed at bringing the game up to date and providing a better = service=20 for Welsh Players.

The email I recently received = from Peter=20 Bevan regarding internet chess is typical of the new attitude. I = won't=20 pretend that there aren't still problems, but at least we now seem to be = moving=20 in the right direction. So credit where credit is due, well done = and keep=20 it up.

Management Board Meeting on 10th February the issue of=20 Internet
Chess was raised as more and more WCU members are playing = chess over=20 the
internet these days and there is no official WCU organised = internet=20 chess.

Upon visiting the British Chess Federation site
http://www.bcf.ndirect.co.uk/ = I note=20 that they you are now providing a
service via GamesParlor in the form = of an=20 Internet Chess Live
program.

I have sent an e-mail to Games = Parlor=20 enquiring about partnership details on
10 Feb but to date have = received no=20 reply, and I am currently pursuing
enquirieswith the = BCF.

However,=20 should this fail, The Management Board would like to hear from = any
WCU member=20 if they would be interested in competing in a Welsh Internet
Chess=20 Championships?

If the GamesParlor avenue does not materialise = then the=20 way this could work
would be as follows:-

Any WCU member = wishing to=20 compete in any Welsh Internet Chess Championship
could sign up with = the Free=20 Internet Chess Server http://www.freechess.org/
, = download the=20 graphical interface (Winboard) at:
http://www.tim-mann.org/xboa= rd.html=20 and following notification to the WCU of
their "handle" on the = Free=20 Internet Chess Server the draw could be made and
competing = players
be=20 notified of a time and a place (or a deadline) to sign onto the = Free
Internet=20 Chess Server the games could take place and even be observed = by
"arbiters" if=20 necessary.

In order to prevent cheating it may be necessary to = play a=20 fast time limit
(say all moves in 30 minutes each) and results = notified to=20 the organiser
accoordingly.

This format could also work in = matches=20 against teams from North Wales and
Aberystwyth.

I would be = interested=20 to know what the members thought of this suggestion
which is radical = in the=20 extreme but it would create a presence on the
Internet for the Welsh = Chess=20 Union apart from this newsletter and the WCU

Any chance somebody could send = me a short=20 report for publication?

I've been told it was very = enjoyable and=20 that Iolo Jones Came first ahead of Howard Williams (2nd). This = must have=20 given great satisfaction to Iolo as there have been a number of = occasions when=20 the result has been the other way around. At last he has received = due=20 reward for his fine play in the tournament over the years. I also=20 understand that Beryl Hughes won the grading prize in the other = section. =20 Any chance of details of the results?

Ladies = Championship.

I did say earlier that there = were problems=20 that we had to face up to, and I'm afraid this is one of = them.

This years Ladies Championship = in Nelson=20 has had to be cancelled. No final decision has been made on how it = will be=20 decided, but it may be included in the Monmouth tournament.

I had intended to include some = comments on=20 the status of the Ladies event in this edition, but I as the forthcoming = tournament has been postponed/cancelled I've decided against = this. =20 Instead I'm going to take more time, talk to some of the interested = parties and=20 prepare a more reasoned article. This is an important matter and it = deserves=20 proper attention. If you have any comments which you would like to = make,please email to me.

He and his = good=20 lady have just adopted a eight month old baby, so their probably to busy = to=20 worry about such things. Andy is extremely happy, but is = surrounded by=20 'rusks' and obviously suffering from sleep deprivation. = Hmmm! Might=20 be a good time to play him?

Under 2000 County=20 Jamboree

Bill Hewitt has sent me a copy = of the games=20 which are include in the attached file. He also sent me the = following=20 comments in two emails

I have not annotated the games of the = attached=20 files, but a number of them were very interesting. I was particularly = impressed=20 with Iaon Rees' win over Alan Young (my clubmate), Ioan is playing very = well at=20 the moment.

Another interesing game was Tony = Haigh-John Hardie=20 from rd 1. Zane Allfords rd 2 game( a Kings Gambit - the opening did not = score=20 well that weekend!) was a tragedy for him. He built up a very strong = looking=20 position, only for the moves Qd3, a3 & Nh4 to result in black = completely=20 turning the tables, almost out of thin air.

As for the host team, we had a weekend = that we=20 would rather forget!

Thanks for the issues that you have = sent me. As for=20 Knight Moves, that was very solely a Leighton Collins production! It was = a shame=20 that it had to fold, but without financial support, a small country like = ours=20 will struggle to support any form of magazine I fear.
