Winter Butterfly  -  9d    17/3/02

Dear Friends

James Sherwin

The report of the game between Dave Roberts and James Sherwin has provoked a considerable response.  Strangely, nearly all of them take a similar form.  On the one hand they are pleased that Dave achieved the result, on the other they would like to know more about James Sherwin.  I've exchanged emails with Jimmy and an article about him will appear in a future edition (not sure when, depends when we can get together for a bit).

Nigel Saunders.

Many of you will have heard on the grapevine that Nigel isn't well at the moment.  When I visited him yesterday, he was lying on his bed brazenly displaying his hairy chest to the nurses.  I'm not sure what effect it was having on them, but one of the porters seemed to be getting quite excited.  Get well soon, Nigel.

Dyfed league Update

Many thanks to Iolo Jones for the following.

Enclosed below is the very latest league table for the Dyfed League as at 15-03-02. As you can see, it is all boiling up to an exciting finish between the Cardigan and Carmarthen 'A' teams, with Cardigan needing to score 7/8 from their last two matches to be sure of clinching the title.
The second match between the two main protagonists, played on 13th March, ended in a narrow victory for Cardigan by 2½-1½, thus reversing their defeat by the same margin in their first match.

DYFED CHESS LEAGUE TABLE - AS AT 15-03-02

1. CARMARTHEN 'A'            P11  W10  D0  L1   36pts.

2. CARDIGAN 'A'                  P10    W9  D0  L1    33½

3. CARDIGAN 'B'                  P10    W5  D1  L4    19

4. PEMBROKE                      P8      W3  D1  L4     14½

                       All the best,
                                    IOLO

WCU Minutes.

I have received comments from Kevin Staveley on this matter.

Dai,

Minutes!!!

I feel as well that they should be published but only once accepted at the following meeting. However, (being the devil's advocate) I've been wondering where??
    -    Sent out to secretaries
    -    Sent out to Zone officials
    -    Published in the newsletter (this could make it rather boring? and restrict space for other items)
    -    Published in the year book (this would mean that they would appear only once a year)

Also when
    -    after every meeting
    -    periodically (say all minutes for every meeting held in a three or six month period)

There is no point in publishing minutes IF MEMBERS DO NOT GET TO SEE THEM. So we need to find the best solution to ensure that when published they are seen by as many people as possible

The board will need to discuss these suggestions and choose the best solution.

Kevin.

Thanks Kevin.  I would be interested to receive further contributions to this debate.

Schools Chess

Some schools have expressed an interest in receiving Winter Butterfly after Easter.  I would therefore be grateful to receive any contributions concerning youth chess, that may be of interest to them.  in particular, could somebody from the Caerphilly Club send me an article on the club, including day and times of meetings.

With this in mind Kevin Staveley has been kind enough to send me a copy of Pawns Quarterly.  I enclose it as a file attachment, but this may be republished in this ezine after Easter, if editions are sent to some schools.

Next Edition.

This edition is getting a bit long, so I'll stop now.  More to come, including an update of the work Paul Orton has done putting Winter Butterfly on the Dyfed website.

I'm already working on the next edition which should go out tonight or Monday.

Best wishes
Dai James.
