Winter Butterfly  -  9f    26/3/02

Dear Friends

Internet Chess

Kevin Staveley has been kind enough to pass on an advert from Chessworld.net.  Its an invite to play giving the URL
http://207.21.192.104/chessclubs/asplogin.asp?from=10219
I haven't tried it myself, maybe someone could try it and write a short review.  Incidentally there's a review of a number of servers on the Bridgend web site.  Go to:
http://www.chessclub.freeserve.co.uk/page_servers.htm
I feel I should congratulate Bridgend Chess Club on their excellent site.  Well worth a visit.  The home page is at:

FIDE Grades

Paul Keevil was good enough to send me a very interesting email about the new FIDE titles.  Unfortunately, I seem to have misfiled it. If I can find it I'll pit it in the next issue.  In the meantime you might like to have a look at the following from another of his emails:

Many thanks to Hugh James for the following:

Dai,
Thanks for sending the Winter Butterfly.
As someone who plays chess in the Dyfed League and also in the Alicante Chess Club when in Spain, I would welcome any move which makes our grading system more in line with that used in other parts of the world.  If abolishing WCU grades and our all having FIDE grades helps achieve this, then I believe it would be a good thing to do.
Hugh James (Newcastle Emlyn Club)

Robert Taylor has asked me to point out an error in the last edition of Winter Butterfly.  I erroneously stated that he had informed me that the cost of ELO grades was 5 Swiss francs per player per year.  Please accept my apologies for this error.  Unfortunately I  can't find where I got this information from.  Can anybody confirm the actual cost.

Oxford v Wales

Reg Jones has kindly sent me copies of the games from the Oxford Wales match.  They are in the attached file.  As he pointed out it might have been a bit difficult for Andrew Hennessy as he was absent due to illness.  Dafydd Johnston took over the organisation for the match.  Subsequently, Andrew has sent me the following email:

Our 100th Subscriber.

In the last issue I mentioned we now had 99 subscribers and wondered who the 100th would be.  Well, a big welcome to Mike Kearn of Bridgend.  As a reward he gets to keep his positions as Bridgend secretary and home committee representative.  Furthermore, if he's not careful, other jobs will be allocated to him when he's not looking.

On a personal note, today (26th March) my wife and I are celebrating our twentieth wedding anniversary.  So don't expect any sense if you try to contact me before teatime tomorrow.

Next issue as soon as I can get it out.

Very best wishes
Dai James.
