Winter Butterfly  -  9g    28/3/02

Dear Friends

Please use this email address for all correspondence.  There appears to be some problem with my AOL address.  If you sent me an email to that address recently, and you haven't had a reply or it hasn't been published, please send me a copy and I'll deal with it ASAP.

Welsh Championships

A final reminder that the Welsh Championships are in the Dolphin Hotel, Whitewalls, Swansea, starting tomorrow (Friday 28th March) at 6 pm.  In addition to the championship there are three other sections, 2050and below, 1650 and below 1300 and below.  Please note that the 1300 section starts Saturday at 9.30am.  Should still be ok to enter, so why not drop along.  Spectators are welcome.

Unfortunately I will be unable to play this year, but I hope to report the events in Butterfly some time next week.

FIDE Grades

I have received the following interesting email from the welsh grading officer, Mark Adams (thinks Mark):

Dai,

regarding FIDE grades. We cannot, as yet, use FIDE grades in place of WCU
grades. This is because the minimum rating for FIDE grades has been 2005.
The consequences of this are that you can get wildly inflated grades. For
example, there are some players with a WCU rating of 1500, who have a FIDE
rating of 2050. These players would then be excluded from majors and minors
and would have to play on too high a board in leagues. Also, FIDE grades are
usually based on a very low number of games which also gives an inaccurate
grade. For example, you score 0/8 against an average of 1500 and yet beat a
single FIDE rated player of 2005 and you get a FIDE grade increase! However,
when FIDE drop the minimum rating to a low enough level we would then be in
a position to consider this move.

Robert Taylor has suggested the possibility of a newsgroup, which could be used for discussions of this nature.  I think that's an excellent idea and I'd like to hear what readers think.  Is there anybody willing to set up and run a newsgroup?

League Update

Also from Mark Adams:

All,

here's the latest tables. (Can Abergavenny B please send their results in?!).

Look's like Monmouth is now pulling away from the pack. It's up to Cwmbran to try and catch them. The race for second spot in division 2 is interesting. The fight is between Newpor and Pontypool, but Abergavenny is not too far behind.
